Open Garden Days 2026 - Echoes of Eden: passion for the Canal Garden
In June, a series of canal gardens — belonging to both private individuals and institutions — will once again open their doors to the public. The annual Open Garden Days are the perfect opportunity to go on a journey of discovery and explore the city’s hidden greenery.
What makes a garden a special place? Once, paradise was considered the ultimate garden — an idyllic, enclosed space where all living beings lived together in harmony.
In the canal gardens, you can still experience a touch of that tranquil, paradisiacal feeling: the gardens are enclosed and feature historical elements such as old trees, walls, and garden houses. But what do these gardens mean to their owners? What can we find of their dreams and passions? How are their preferences reflected in the design, the choice of plants, or the decorative details? In this way, the canal garden becomes not only a place of beauty and serenity but also a mirror of human desires and stories.
Garden enthusiasts are offered a unique opportunity to peek behind the closed canal houses and discover the green oases hidden within the canal belt. Both classical and contemporary gardens can be visited over three days — on 19, 20, and 21 June 2026.
A portion of the proceeds from the Open Garden Days goes to the Canal Gardens Fund, managed by the Dutch Cultural Heritage Fund. This fund supports Amsterdam-based projects that promote public access to the city’s green heritage — open spaces for everyone, across the city. From the canals, for the city.
